Before and after posture correction — real MAPS™ patient, pelvis realigned over the ankles

Sway back corrected. 3.72″ of forward pelvic shift, brought back to stacked over the ankles — and the lower-back compression driving the pain with it.

Objective Proof

Before & After Posture & Movement Analysis

A posture distortion is not a cosmetic flaw. It is a clue — a visible record of which system stopped doing its job, and why the pain keeps coming back. Every patient is scanned at intake and again after their program. Here is what the scans revealed, and what changed.

Green is where a balanced body should line up — true vertical from the side, exact center from the front.
Red is where this body actually sits. The gap between them is the distortion — and the load it creates.
Before and after posture correction — real MAPS patient, pelvis returned to neutral from anterior tilt

Anterior Pelvic Tilt Corrected

The pelvis has tipped forward — anterior tilt — pushing an exaggerated arch into the lower back and driving her pain. What the scan can’t show is why. Deep inside the torso sit two muscles that are meant to work as a matched pair: the diaphragm, the breathing muscle beneath the ribs, and the pelvic floor at the base of the torso. When they line up and work together, they build gentle pressure inside the abdomen — an internal support system that holds the spine and pelvis steady from within. Hers had drifted out of sync, so that support faded. Without it, the pelvis has nothing holding it level, so it tips forward and the lower back takes the strain. Restore the connection between those two muscles, and the pelvis settles back to neutral on its own.

Before and after alignment correction — real MAPS patient, body recentered over its midline

Pelvic Misalignment Corrected

A severe pelvic misalignment has unleveled the foundation, throwing the body into a 9° lean to his right. The asymmetry travels up the entire chain — one shoulder rides higher than the other, and the back carries the strain every hour of the day. That strain is where the pain comes from. The lean is the clue that tells us the source sits at the pelvis, not at the spot that hurts. Seen from the front, green marks the body’s exact midline and the horizontal lines show whether the shoulders and hips sit level. In our experience, as the spine is brought back into alignment this measurement improves objectively — a pattern we have tracked across many years of patient data.

Before and after squat assessment — real MAPS patient, torso and shins realigned parallel under load

A Faulty Squat Was the Clue to His Lower Back & Pelvic Pain

The pain was severe. The squat showed why. In a stable squat, the torso and shins run parallel — the green lines. In the red, the spine is collapsing into flexion: the back extensors are not coordinating with the glutes and deep core, and the diaphragm and pelvic floor have lost their balance. Without that pressure system, nothing holds the spine tall under load — the strain falls on the lower back, and the unbalanced pelvic floor drives pain into the pelvis. That instability is what generates the pain. Rebuild the deep core, and the stability returns — and the pain resolves with it.

What Our Patients Say

From desk workers to marathon runners, these patients came in with chronic pain — and left without it, once the MAPS™ Protocol corrected the source.

"Thousands of dollars, dozens of hours, a handful of spine doctors — nothing worked. Then I found Body in Balance."

After a skiing accident, Brian spent three years trying to find the right team to help him tackle his back, posture, and alignment issues. He saw spine specialists. He worked with multiple PTs. He invested thousands of dollars and dozens of hours — and still wasn't making progress.

"A handful of spine doctors and PTs, dozens of hours, and thousands of dollars later I still wasn't making progress. Body in Balance changed all of that."

What made the difference wasn't just another adjustment. It was the comprehensive, personalized MAPS approach — one that addressed his issues from the root cause rather than chasing symptoms.

"Their comprehensive and personalized MAPS approach is well rounded and helped me tackle my own issues from the root cause. I'm finally finding lasting relief and starting to hit new heights with my strength, athleticism and overall well-being. Anyone with a spine should consider coming to see Dr. Lefkowitz and team for a consult."

"I was 16 when the headache came one day and never left. By 28, I couldn't work. Nothing helped — until now."

Alan's story is one of the most extraordinary in our patient community. A headache arrived when he was 16 and simply never left. Over the years it multiplied — dizziness, anxiety, digestion issues, sleep problems, extreme fatigue, sensitivity to light, sounds, smells. He worked his way through the entire medical community. Then alternative therapies. Then every healing modality he could find, "sane and crazy." Nothing helped. By 28 he was practically bedridden and couldn't work.

"Chiropractic is a very bittersweet topic for me. Sweet because it has helped me beyond my wildest dreams, and bitter because I suffered needlessly for 13 years before finding it."

Three months into his care at Body in Balance, Alan noticed something he hadn't experienced in over a decade: progress. Real, measurable, sustained progress. And something else he didn't expect — the exercises and posture training were helping him hold his adjustments and need them less frequently.

"Posture training and exercises are a very big part of care, and is the one thing that has helped me with holding the adjustments and becoming less and less dependent on getting adjusted. You don't need to continue living in pain. There is a different way, and Body in Balance can help."

"I went to the ER multiple times. Doctors kept telling me to lose weight. I did. The pain was still there."

Nikkita had been dealing with chest pain, back pain, neck pain, knee pain, and anxiety attacks that were affecting her work — for years. When the chest pain became unbearable, she went to the emergency room. Multiple times. The diagnosis she kept receiving had nothing to do with her spine.

"My chest pains were blamed on my BMI. I was told to lose weight. I did — I went from 240 to 200. When I went back, the doctor just kept telling me to lose weight. Finally, my best friend referred me to Body in Balance and at that point I was defeated."

"My anxiety attacks were getting worse and the pain in my chest and back became so unbearable that I was sleeping no more than 4 hours a night. My insurance would not cover the chiropractor but after my consultation, I decided to pay out of pocket."

Once she began care at Body in Balance, the picture changed. Under the MAPS™ Protocol — adjustments paired with movement retraining — her chest pain and back pain subsided, and the anxiety attacks became less frequent, then stopped being something she thought about at all.

"Nowadays, I am able to sleep through the night, run, bike and do HIIT without the striking pain I used to have. The support and knowledge I gained helped me create a lifestyle of holistic healing — even during months when I was unable to have an adjustment. This experience was worth every penny and I will never regret investing in long-term healing of my body."

"I've seen innumerable PTs, orthopedic surgeons, and chiropractors. None were able to help me be active again — until now."

Natalie is 29, a former competitive swimmer, volleyball player, dancer, and powerlifter whose athletic career was derailed by pain in 2019. She had partially dislocated both shoulders, suffered severe migraines since a car accident at 14, and seen more providers than most people see in a lifetime. Nothing worked.

"I have seen innumerable physical therapists, orthopedic doctors and surgeons, massage therapists, and chiropractors — none were able to help me be active again and feel good just in my daily life."

"The movement sessions and massage work are so important for maintaining stability and ensuring that your chiropractic treatments can become a maintenance tool rather than a chronic crutch."

After just one month at Body in Balance, something clicked. The MAPS program addressed not just the structural issues but the neurological patterns her body had developed — and the exercise supervision made a difference she'd never experienced before.

"The unique exercises the doctors teach you have helped me correct my posture and enjoy properly executed movement in the gym for the FIRST TIME EVER. They actually watch you do each exercise to make sure each rep is corrected when needed. Erika's massage work has released parts of my body that have been locked for what feels like years."

"Thank you to everyone for helping me dance and train again, find better sleep, and invaluable relief. A little piece of health and heaven in the middle of Manhattan."

"A sufferer of chronic lower back pain, having seen the top doctors at HSS and physical therapists — the programs here combine the best of every discipline, and use real data to measure results."

"I call myself very lucky to have found Dr. Jan and the team a few months back and couldn't possibly recommend them more. A sufferer of chronic lower back pain, having seen the top doctors at HSS, physical therapists, etc, the programs offered at body in balance combine the best of all disciplines (technical adjustments, deep massage/ART, personalized training) to treat and cure pain holistically. The doctors are as much caring as they're knowledgeable and take an innovative approach using quantitative data to actually measure results. Such a smart forward thinking practice, I'd imagine this is what the broader field of chiropracty should and will look like in a few years. Thank you Dr. Jan and the team for your commitment to my wellbeing."

"I first went to them for lower back pain as a result of being stupid at the gym with the weights. What I thought was going to be a quick fix turned out to be a life changing experience."

"I can’t sing the praises enough about the team at Body in Balance. Their patient experience is second to none, and everybody there makes you feel welcome from day 1 and beyond. I first went to them for lower back pain as a result of being stupid at the gym with the weights. Little did I know that they would open my eyes to a whole new world through their holistic approach to chiropractic care and posture training. What I thought was going to be a quick fix for back pain turned out to be a life changing experience with their extended care program. I never realized how the spine had such a significant influence on the musculoskeletal system. After the first few adjustments my brain fog disappeared, I felt more energized, and my mood was significantly better. Complimenting the regular adjustments with the posture trainings supercharged my ability to bring everything back into alignment. I never knew how out of whack my posture was and how much of an affect it had on my overall health. I am forever grateful for discovering Body in Balance, and the excellent team of professionals there."

"Dr. Jan has gone above and beyond to help me with debilitating pain from old gymnastic injuries — including five knee reconstructions — that have affected me for years. At times I could not walk without excruciating pain."

"I could rave about Dr. Jan and his wonderful staff for hours; where do I even begin? Body in Balance Chiropractic is my home away from home. It is the warmest, friendliest, and most accommodating + compassionate medical practice I've ever stepped foot in — which is saying something. I count every person there as a dear friend. Dr. Jan has gone above and beyond to help me with debilitating pain from old gymnastic injuries — including five knee reconstructions — that have affected me for years. He spent a great deal of time with me on my first visit (and still does!) beginning with a thorough assessment of my back, neck, knees and other issues. I could feel the imbalance in my body for years, and at times could not walk without excruciating pain. After one adjustment, I felt so much relief. That day was the first time I slept through the night in months. Since then, Dr. Jan has done a series of different adjustments to alleviate pain in various areas of my body. We've also done movement training — exercises tailored specifically to me that have helped strengthen weak muscles that, over time, have pulled my body out of alignment. So many chiropractors do the same three moves and spend three minutes with you; that is not Dr. Jan. He never makes me feel rushed. I've also never heard of a chiropractor who tries to strengthen weak muscles. His goal is to get your body functioning so well that you see him LESS — which in my experience is unheard of. But I will never stop going to Dr. Jan. I want to maintain what we've been able to accomplish. It has been life changing, to say the least."

"My improvement is nothing short of miraculous. I came in with stage 4 bone-on-bone arthritis in my hip. After only a month, my flexibility has improved about 60%. I doubt I'll ever need surgery."

"My improvement is nothing short of miraculous! I came to Dr. Jan with stage 4 bone on bone arthritis in my hip. The orthopedic doctor told me it would be only a matter of time before I came back for surgery. After only a month of working with Dr. Jan, I'm feeling so much better. My pain has subsided substantially. I'm walking better without sharp pain and my flexibility has improved about 60%. If he can help me make this much improvement after only a month working with him, I doubt I'll ever need to do surgery. His personalized care and attention is extraordinary and incomparable to any other chiropractor I've been to before. He's very knowledgeable, zones in on your problem areas and gets you quick results! Dr. Jan is the best!"

"I can't recommend this chiropractic clinic enough! I came in struggling with severe sciatic pain which went all along my lower back into my left leg, and after a couple of weeks of treatment I finally found relief thanks to their incredible team. "I came in with severe neck pain that had lasted months. I've tried so many approaches over the years — PT, chiro, sports and deep tissue massage. Dr. Jan is the first one where I can clearly see and feel the improvements."

"I came to Body in Balance (Dr Jan) because I had severe neck pain for months and couldn't imagine what a traditional doctor would do about it other than prescribing pain medication. They measured and showed me my posture which after decades of sitting was pretty horrible. I've committed to a three month program that included not only adjustments but crucially very impactful exercises that I was doing religiously. The program also comes with massages and laser sessions. There are other things involved like orthotics and neck pillows - it's a very well thought through, holistic approach. I'm an ambitious runner and midway through the program, a knee injury popped up and Dr Jan also took care of this. The knee treatment allowed me to still complete the Chicago marathon pain free in ~3:15 when I thought a few weeks before the event, I definitely won't be able to run it. At the end of the program they measured my posture as well and while not perfect, significant improvements were clearly visible. This will never be "done" but I'm so glad I found the right way to fix things. I've tried so many different approaches over the years to mainly fix my running issues (PT, Chiro, sports & deep tissue massage...). Dr Jan is the first one where I can clearly see and feel the improvements."

"Dr. Jan suggested shockwave therapy, and it has been an absolute game changer. After just four sessions, my golfer’s elbow is completely gone and the pain in my hands has decreased significantly."

"I honestly cannot recommend Body In Balance enough. This place is truly amazing, and the entire team is wonderful. Dr. Jan has played a huge role in helping me get my quality of life back. I came in with chronic tendinosis in both and right elbow that had been causing me pain and frustration for months. Dr. Jan suggested shockwave therapy, and it has been an absolute game changer. After just four sessions, I've seen incredible results. My golfer's elbow is completely gone, the pain in my hands has decreased significantly, and my mobility has improved so much. I'm genuinely surprised that more people don't know about shockwave therapy. It's such an incredible treatment with benefits for so many types of pain, and discovering it here has been life-changing. I've also been doing laser therapy after my sessions, and it's made a noticeable difference in how quickly my tissues recover. Combined with my ongoing physical therapy, it's really helped to speed up my healing process. Because of the issues with my hands, I had started to develop upper back and neck pain from overcompensating. Dr. Jan recommended the MAPS program since my posture was not right, and after just one month, my posture has improved, my strength has increased, and my back pain has decreased dramatically. I truly feel like I'm getting my life back, and I'm beyond grateful. I'm still continuing my MAPS program and I'm so excited to see even more progress. Thank you, Body In Balance, for your care, expertise, and kindness. You've truly made a difference in my life, and I couldn't recommend you more highly."

"I had another sciatic flare-up and was procrastinating about coming in. His technique provided instant relief — I walked out looking and feeling like I’d just had a two-hour massage."

"2024: As you can see, I've been seeing Dr. Lefkowitz and his amazing team since 2017. I pop in for an adjustment every now and again. Recently, I had another sciatic flair up and was procrastinating setting up an appointment for a much-needed adjustment. I normally see Dr. Lefkowitz, but since he was booked, I accepted an appointment with a new doctor who joined his practice - Dr. Crawford. What he did and how he did it, I have no idea. All I know is that I walked out of the office looking and feeling like I just had a 2-hour massage. His technique provided instant relief! I feel like a new person and am once again beyond grateful for the continued support and professionalism of the Body in Balance team!"

"I danced my entire life and stopped after several injuries. The movement training rebuilt how my body holds itself — my posture and strength are transformed, and I’m close to reaching my most aggressive goals."

"I am following up my initial glowing recommendation of Dr. Jan and his team after completing his 3-month MAPS program. I wanted to wait until this point because I know that initial reviews don't always capture the full experience and are often given prematurely. A couple of months later, I have EVEN MORE positive things to say about my experience. And by the way, I am not one who often takes the time to write reviews, although I admittedly read them a lot! I found Dr. Jan through a random internet search when the physical therapist with whom I had been working left. I knew no one who had gone to him before. We met and he took the time to listen, and after hitting a rut in PT, I decided to give his program a chance. As for my background, I have danced my entire life (I'm in my 50's), and I stopped four years ago after sustaining several injuries. I was determined to overcome my pain and figure out my body. Dr. Jan quickly became an ESSENTIAL part of this journey and has helped me IMMENSELY. He is supportive, kind, professional, and always reassuring. Even more, he is thoughtful, creative and intelligent in his approach. Dr. Jan knows his stuff! While the onus is on you as the patient to do the work, the payback is high. As an overachiever and perfectionist, I admittedly got frustrated with myself from time to time, not always seeing linear results. I had to make several mistakes to learn, but I persisted, and the effort has well been worth it. I am close to reaching my more aggressive goals after just 3 months. Doing the work is critical for success, but even if you did nothing at all and just allowed Dr. Jan to align you, you would still feel appreciably better. My first few initial adjustments before I started the program easily substantiated that. Wrapping up, I love that Dr. Jan takes a lot of pride in your results and his own. It is teamwork the entire way, and he wants you to succeed. He genuinely cares. I could go on gushing, but you likely get the point. The experience has well been worth the time and effort, and I am in a much better place. And as a final point, I am continuing my work with him beyond the 3 months!"

"Last summer my right leg froze and I could not walk. After two weeks with Body in Balance, I was walking again. I honestly don't know what would have happened had I not found this practice."

"BIBC is the best chiropractic practice I have been to in 30 years. First, the offices are beautiful: clean and serene with the best equipment in the business. Second, all the chiropractors on staff are excellent. These appointments are not 10 minutes and out. The sessions are at least 30 minutes and use different modalities, as laser, heat, electrical stimulation. This practice has an entirely different approach to health and healing than I have seen in other practices. This is not a cookie cutter high volume practice. I will call it a gold standard practice. I found this practice on Google, and based on my knowledge of health practices I knew this practice was spot on and I was more than impressed. And I was helped very quickly. Last summer my right leg froze and I could not walk. After two weeks with Body in Balance, I was walking again. I honestly don't know what would have happened had I not found this practice. I also took a series of services which include massage, body movement (to correct the imbalances which create my need for chiropractic), breath work, and nutrition counseling. In this time of COVID and working long hours at home my time at Body in Balance is essential for my physical and mental health. And, I have never had the pleasure of being treated by such nice and competent people. I am very grateful. I keep saying a chiropractic session at BIBC is not like any other chiropractic session I have ever had."

"My posture and form have significantly improved — along with increased flexibility and strength from the movement training. I experience almost zero pain now."

"I cannot say enough amazing things about Body in Balance. Before coming to Dr. Jan, I had been experiencing pain for over 3 years, seeing a traditional chiropractor weekly, and barely going a week without pain. I was looking for a solution that could keep up with my active, athletic lifestyle, and was looking for something that went beyond traditional chiropractic care to keep me pain free and able to live my life. Fast forward, I have completed the signature MAPS program, and I have done a complete 360°— I experience almost zero pain, increased flexibility and strength because of the movement training/exercises, improved recovery and less constant tension because of massage, and countless overall improvements because of adjustments and the program itself. My posture and form has also significantly improved. Body in Balance truly changed my life because of the unique and holistic approach to care, recovery and healing."

"Dr. John Crawford puts the "whole" back into holistic. I have experienced his deft use of hypnotherapy, shamanic healing, medical massage, and coaching — my experiences with him changed my life."

"As a retired clinical psychologist with complicated medical issues, I was impressed and delighted to find healing for body, mind and spirit under one roof in Body in Balance. I had the privilege of working with Dr. Crawford, Erika Taveras, and Dr. Lefkowitz over a few years; each bring unique talents for healing to their practices. Dr. Lefkowitz is passionate and deeply knowledgeable about healing the body; his enthusiasm is contagious and motivating. His skill set and ability to flex means that you don't leave the treatment room until you and he are satisfied that the issue is resolved or on the way to resolution. Erika is the definition of a healer. Compassionate, intuitive, and a master of many techniques, you leave her massage table changed - both in terms of whatever pains or tension you came in for, and with a new relationship to and understanding of your mind and body. John Crawford puts the "whole" back into holistic. His training in chiropractic and acupuncture are informed by his extensive training in a multitude of additional techniques. I have experienced his deft use of hypnotherapy, shamanic healing, medical massage, and coaching; my experiences with him (and with Erika) changed my life. These are not just medical practitioners, but artists in the application of medical, massage, and spiritual methods and traditions. Without reservation, I recommend Body in Balance in general, and these fine professionals specifically."

"After the loss of my father and a buildup of work stress, I felt overwhelmed. Between nutrition, breathwork, meditation and adjustments, I am feeling much better in body, mind and spirit."

"The Body in Balance team is much more than just a Chiropractic practice. They are a dedicated team of empathetic healers who focus on holistic positive changes that have a lasting impact. After the loss of my father and a buildup of work stress, I gained weight, fell out of my regular exercise routine, experienced back and neck pain and felt very overwhelmed with balancing work, family, and friends. I was fortunate to partake in the six month Total Mind Body program, which focuses on nutrition, postural exercises, adjustments, massages, orthotics, breathwork and meditation. The caring, holistic team approach was exactly what I needed to start making changes to take better care of myself. Dr. Jan led my nutrition and posture therapy sessions, and partnered with the team on my regular adjustments. The team was very impactful with breathwork and energy sessions, and the front desk keeps everyone organized and facilitates scheduling with ease. I am feeling much better overall in body, mind and spirit. I have adjusted my eating habits, take supplements to support better digestion, added regular exercise alongside my posture exercises, and started a daily meditation practice. As a result, I improved my posture tremendously, lost 18 pounds, and have grown in strength, flexibility and peacefulness. I appreciate the team's approach, and greatly value each team member's support."

"I would give more stars if I could! I've been going to Body in Balance for a few years. They are amazing and have really, really helped me. The doctors are extremely knowledgeable and they take the time to carefully listen to you and then work to find the best treatment for you at that time and for the long term. I've never felt rushed and know they are invested in my overall health. They've been especially helpful during my COVID-19 recovery. From joint pain to brain fog, I swear Body in Balance has been my savior. The adjustments significantly clear my brain fog and help me move around without pain. They've suggested anti-inflammation diets and supplements (only as an FYI - they do not push products on you!) as well as other ideas to help me heal holistically. The doctors know their patients and they really care. That's hard to find these days. These doctors are actually in it to help people - that's their only goal. They've allowed me to be much more active and manage pain significantly better than I otherwise would. Plus, the front desk staff is lovely and extremely helpful. I highly recommend them."

"I came in with chronic lower back and glute pain from a herniated disc pinching a sciatic nerve. I had tried cortisone shots, acupuncture and physical therapy — none relieved my symptoms. After two months here, I was pain free."

"I came to Body in Balance based only on the good reviews online looking for treatment to help eliminate chronic lower back / glute pain due to a herniated disc that was pinching a sciatic nerve. I had tried many other treatments including cortisone shots, acupuncture, and physical therapy, none of which had managed to relieve my symptoms. I didn't have huge hopes, but I was intrigued by Body in Balance's program, which combines chiropractic adjustments with a tailored regimen of posture training (a version of physical therapy designed to eliminate the underlying causes of pain). They gave me a free consult and designed a 4 month plan to eliminate the symptoms. I'm just finishing the plan now, and it has totally delivered on everything they promised. After two months of treatment, I was pain free, and I'm feeling stronger than I have in years. The posture training in particular helped me understand and address the deeper causes on my symptoms. From what I can tell, very few providers combine exercise and adjustments in this fashion, so I feel incredibly lucky to have stumbled onto them. I'm looking forward to living life without pain again now that I have the tools to take care of myself, and know that I can always come back for a periodic check-in or adjustment."

"This isn't just a massage to make you feel good. This is rehabilitation and healing for your body. I walked out feeling like I was in a different body."

"I've been a patient of Dr. Jan's for years and I will never stop coming. But today was my first massage with Erika and it was unlike anything I've ever experienced. Her level of knowledge of the body, of its function, and how she assesses and identifies areas of need is a skill set that is so high caliber it'll blow you away. She is able to marry both eastern and western techniques, and has the absolute best therapeutic techniques I've ever experienced. This isn't just a massage to make you feel good, this is rehabilitation and healing for your body. I have a difficult chest wall muscle skeletal condition that needs deep tissue work, and massage can be extremely painful and uncomfortable for me. But Erika's technique was a beautiful mix of progressively deep work with thoughtful and purposeful manipulation and she kept me as comfortable as possible the whole time. I walked out feeling new, refreshed, and like I was in a different body. It's unlike any massage you will ever experience and it is 1,000% worth it!!!"

"His back was literally curved and slumped over like an old person — and now his back is stronger than ever and straight, the way it's supposed to be."

"My husband is a musician and from all the years of lugging around heavy equipment, sitting at a desk all day and slumping over to play guitar - his back was a complete mess and in pain. For a year I was begging him to see Dr. Jan who has not only helped me but also a number of my clients. Matt didn't really understand what a chiropractor was so he had to get to the point where he was desperate for help. He literally crawled into Dr. Jan's office 8 months ago and after his experience with Body In Balance he's a HUGE believer. After the first session, the pain left Matt for 12 hours and he didn't need to take any pain medication. Not only did he go for adjustments but Dr. Jan and the team taught him how to strengthen his back with techniques he can practice at any time and anywhere. I can't believe the transformation. His back was literally curved and slumped over like an old person and now his back is stronger than ever and straight...the way it's supposed to be. Now, he is officially healed and we're down to maintenance, which means coming in once a month for a tune-up. We're so in love with the Body In Balance team and the proven results that a lot of our friends & colleagues are now patients. We are FOREVER grateful."

"My sciatic pain was immediately remedied — I could walk again, and I got the best night's sleep I had in quite a while."

"I first met Dr. Jan late in my last trimester of my pregnancy. I had serious sciatic and upper back pain. Dr. Jan came so highly recommended that I made an appointment and hoped for the best. My sciatic pain was immediately remedied! I could walk again, and I got the best nights sleep I had in quite a while. He also relieved the burning pain in my back due to my growing bump. He was thoughtful, attentive and walked me through each thing he was doing. I was hooked after my first visit, and can't wait to return post baby for an adjustment!"

Herniated Disc

"I herniated a disc and a local PT diagnosed me with a pulled muscle. Dr. Jan’s diagnosis was later confirmed exactly as he’d said in an MRI — and now I’m better than I was even before the injury."

"Last June I injured my back (herniated disk) and I went to a local midtown physical therapy place that diagnosed me with a pulled muscle. After some very painful treatments that only seemed to make it worse I went looking further and was referred to Dr. Lefkowitz from another professional. I have not been a patient of chiropractic in any consistent way before this but He has made me a convert. I had deteriorated pretty badly, could not sit down for long, was sleeping on the floor and had to stand at my desk at work. Dr. Jan diagnosed me (which was later confirmed exactly as he had said in an MRI) and got me on a treatment plan of directed core exercises and PT and chiropractic care. I was in such excruciating pain that for 2 months the only relief i could get was treatments 3 times a week. (I wasn't keen on meds) It did take a few months but by following his prescription of exercises and adjustments i was able to get better and now I'm better than i was even before the injury. What I most like about Dr. Jan is his treatments based on sound clinical research. He is not waving incense sticks over you or just adjusting you for pain relief. He has given me a plan for being free of back pain for far into the future. It has worked so far and I trust it will continue to be so. I am continuing to go for maintenance every other week. I feel like going to to the dentist this is the right choice for me for my health."

"I continue to discover the ways in which physical imbalance and over- or under-compensation are really manifestations of long-standing mental habits and defenses. The work with both of you continues to be freeing — physically and psychologically."

"Dear Doctors, I’m deeply grateful to have the privilege of learning from the two of you. You continue to teach me lessons in trust, patience, kindness, gentleness, and attunement. Trust in the process and in the teachers, patience with the process and with myself, and compassion for the parts of me that are still learning. I continue to discover the ways in which physical imbalance and over- or under-compensation are really manifestations of long-standing mental habits and defenses. The work with both of you continues to be freeing—physically and psychologically. There is something incredibly special and sacred about the healing practice that you’ve cultivated individually and collectively. I look forward to one day reading a best-selling book distilling the insights you’ve gained through years of client work and personal experience. The world would be a more peaceful place if we were all more fully adjusted! —Toni"

"What I love most about Stephen's work is his ability to focus on both the parts and the whole simultaneously. He has a deep conceptual knowledge of the body and how everything connects."

"After years of relying on massage to heal dance and fitness injuries, I know how hard it is to find a truly skilled therapist — and how much I dread starting over when one moves on. I prefer to build a relationship with one person over time, because I believe that continuity is what drives real progress. I started working with Stephen shortly after joining Body in Balance. As a woman, I've generally found it easier to work with female therapists — so the fact that Stephen earned my trust so quickly says a lot. After hearing Dr. Jan describe his work, I decided to give him a try, and was impressed from the start. Before my first session, Stephen had already connected with Dr. Jan and reviewed his notes so he could best help me. He also asked me to describe what had been going on with my body, listened carefully, and has never stopped. That was nearly two years ago, and together we have made tremendous progress tackling my many injuries. What I love most about Stephen's work is his ability to focus on both the parts and the whole simultaneously. He has a deep conceptual knowledge of the body and how everything connects. Like me, he is a creative problem solver — he has managed to decode my intuitive, experiential descriptions of what I'm feeling and design a treatment plan that actually works. He paces each session extremely well, thoroughly covering everything I need in a finite amount of time, which is no small feat. And I never leave sore or worse off. He finds the perfect balance every time. I would wholeheartedly recommend Stephen as a massage therapist. His work is complementary and additive to Dr. Jan's — the two make a powerful pair. Beyond his skill, Stephen is a genuinely compassionate human being. I am so happy to have found him."

"Erika gives the best massage I've ever had — and I like deep tissue massage."

"Dr. Jan and Erika carried me through my last month of pregnancy and now I'm doing the posture correction program during postpartum. Everyone is very knowledgeable and has the best bedside manner. Erika gives the best massage I've ever had (I like deep tissue massage); I only had Steve once, but he is also great! And Dr. Jan can take away back pain and headache with a couple of moves. My quality of life is significantly improved now and I am very happy that I was recommended this place. Next pregnancy, I'll start going in my third trimester to be able to sleep better. Also, for moms with breech babies: even though I didn't need this kind of help, I know that the doctors here are certified in the Webster technique that helps turn the baby."

"I developed a frozen shoulder during the pandemic. Thanks in large part to their guidance, treatment and workouts, I no longer have a frozen shoulder and I'm back to working out five times a week with no pain."

"The team at Body in Balance is excellent - very professional and experienced. Through the years, my fitness journey has brought some discomfort and pain in my upper back / neck, lower back, and most recently I developed a frozen shoulder during the pandemic. Thanks in large part to their guidance, treatment and workouts, I no longer have a frozen shoulder and I'm back to working out 5 times a week with no pain. No matter the issue I am having, the team can offer their expertise. Between chiropractic adjustments, movement training to correct posture and prevent injuries in the future, nutrition consultations to address inflammation (through an MRT test), or massage therapy with some of the most talented massage therapists I've ever seen (Stephen and Erika), this is a place you can trust to look at you and your situation holistically to find a solution for your pain. I have referred both my Dad and boyfriend to this office in the past year, and they have also found success with the team to decrease their pain and dramatically improve posture. Lastly, the team will work with you to create a plan/package that will get you to where you need to be, but I have personally found great success with their MAPS program. It combines chiropractic adjustments, movement training, massage therapy, and other bonus features into one package so the team can address your pain from all the necessary perspectives. My treatments at Body in Balance have been life-changing experiences which allows me to enjoy a pain-free, active life. Everyone on the team is friendly, approachable, patient, and highly adept at what they do. I cannot recommend them more!"

"I'd sought supposedly the very best traditional care — a top physiatrist, muscle relaxants, even a neck brace. These were just band-aids. The team here helped me conquer crippling pain."

"The team at Body in Balance Chiropractic really know what they are doing and they are extremely good at it. In the past 3 years, I have had serious pain in my neck and back due to misalignment. Prior to meeting the Doctors at Body in Balance, I had sought supposedly the very best traditional care (including a top physiatrist at the Hospital of Special Surgery) and received the usual muscle relaxants, anti-inflammatory and related medication (even a neck brace to wear). These were just band-aids and unhealthy ones at that. They don't work and do nothing to address the underlying problem. The Doctors at Balance helped me conquer crippling pain with sensible, caring and thorough treatment, including adjustments, massages and teaching me exercise routines that not only removed the immediate pain, but also helped me prevent future recurrence of the same problem. Chiropractic medicine makes perfect sense to me and I am certain that Body in Balance is one of the top practices in New York. I can't say enough good things about this practice. I am grateful to them and pleased to offer others my highest possible recommendation."

"I was suffering weekly migraines that lasted two to three days — afraid to leave home without medication. Today they're down to about one every couple of months."

"When I first started going to Body in Balance I was suffering from weekly migraines which would last from 2-3 days on average. I was afraid to leave home without medication. Nothing gave me relief and I was convinced I had a brain tumor. A very good friend referred me to Dr. Jan Lefkowitz and while I didn't understand how chiropractic care would help me I was desperate for relief. Dr. Jan is a very passionate, knowledgeable and caring doctor. After a thorough screening I learned that i was incredibly misaligned and Dr. Jan explained how these misalignments were contributing to my migraines and neck pain. I committed to a three month plan and through weekly adjustments and strengthening specific muscles my migraines are down to about 1 every couple of months. My posture and mobility have really improved and I can't thank Dr. Jan and his staff enough. I highly recommend BIBC."

"A posture concern I'd carried since my pre-teen years — a hump at the base of my neck and rounded shoulders. My physical concerns have improved tremendously."

"I came here primarily to address a posture concern that I've had since my pre-teen years. I've always noticed a slight humping at the base of my neck along with rounded shoulders. I kept putting the issue off for years because I wasn't even sure if my problems could be reversed and I also didn't know the right medical professional to consult with - physical therapist, masseuse, accupuncturist, etc. When a close friend of mine solved her issue at this office, I decided that I no longer had an excuse to keep living in denial. I came here with a proactive attitude and have felt really empowered every step of the way. My physical concerns have improved tremendously and I feel incredibly grateful."

"I was 16 when this headache came one day and never left. By the time I was 28, I was practically bedridden — I couldn't work anymore. Chiropractic has helped me beyond my wildest dreams, and I suffered needlessly for 13 years before finding it."

"I want to start off by saying that this is the first review I have ever written on my own accord in my whole life as a consumer. It was these very same reviews that helped me find Body in Balance, and perhaps my review will help someone else do the same. Chiropractic is a very bittersweet topic for me. Sweet because it has helped me beyond my wildest dreams, and bitter because I suffered needlessly for 13 years before finding it. I was 16 when this headache came one day and never left. They got worst over the years and began being accompanied by more and more new symptoms. As a result, I starting making my way through the whole medical community, but to no avail. I then turned my attention to lifestyle and alternative therapies, but also all with very little success. I tried every healing modality (sane and crazy), and every nutritional angle there was. Nothing helped. Ironically, I never tried chiropractic throughout the years because almost everyone I encountered told me it wasn't a good idea and I would make things worse. So I listened. By the time I was 28, I was practically bedridden. I couldn't work anymore. SOME of the symptoms I had included headaches, dizziness, anxiety, digestion issues, sleep issues, extreme fatigue, aches and pains all over, tingling, sensitivity to lights, smells, sounds, tastes, and even temperature. It was at this point that I gave up and decided to give Chiropractic a try. I couldn't live like this anymore. I started going to a different chiropractor initially, and for the first time in my life, it helped with some of my symptoms. Things slowly got better over time but my progress eventually plateaued. Knowing there had to be more, I started searching for a different doctor and came across Body in Balance. Having been a patient for three months now, I can say they have helped me tremendously from where I had left off with my previous chiropractor. They have helped me a lot with what I was experiencing, and I would imagine that things will continue in that direction. The whole experience has been a very pleasant surprise and it's one of the best decisions I've made for my health thus far. Some key points: Dr. Jan and the team are VERY good at what they do. Every adjustment is precise and flawless, and I always feel better when getting up from the adjustment table. They are also very knowledgeable. Beyond that however, they are very patient and willing to share their knowledge. I ask a lot of questions, and they have always taken the time to answer my questions, even if there is another patient waiting in the next room. They truly believe in what they are doing, and this translates into their work. You can't fake true passion and what you love. They also take a very comprehensive approach to care, which is very different from most other chiropractors. Posture training and exercises are a very big part of care, and is the one thing that has helped me with holding the adjustments and becoming less and less dependent on getting adjusted. The staff is extremely warm and inviting. Every single person at Body in Balance is wonderful. They are always smiling, accommodating, and have a genuine concern for their patients. I can go on and on and on, but what can I say? My review is a reflection of my experience at Body in Balance. It has been a wonderful journey so far, and I wanted to thank them for all they've done for me. If you are experiencing any sort of issues, I strongly implore you to reach out to them and see what they can do for you. You don't need to continue living in pain. There is a different way, and Body in Balance can help. I wish you the best in your journey."

"You with the back problems — go see Dr. Jan. Since starting his plan after a traumatic back injury, I’ve had only one minor back injury, something that used to happen twice a month."

"I have not treated my body very well: over the past 40some years I have dislocated my shoulder, sprained my ankles countless times, dislocated my right hip, had surgery on both knees, severe tendonitis in both shoulders, my body has been through the wringer. I've gone to chiropractors since I was 14, I've seen eight locally during my time here in New York City, so I'm very familiar with the work that they do, but Dr. Jan was different. Most chiropractors (OK ALL of them until I met Dr. Jan) generally ask what's ailing you and then hack away at that particular thing and then send you on your merry way. Dr. Jan does want to know what's wrong but he's got a plan. He looks at the problem holistically and passionately. Your problems and your bad habits are all a product of something in your past and it's not going to go away in just a single session. Dr. Jan lays out a plan of attack including posture training (yes, homework is required) that will get you to a pain-free way of life as long as you embrace the process. Since starting the plan with him five months ago (after a traumatic back injury), I've had only one minor back injury, something that used to happen twice a month. And I wasn't being good about doing the homework. That one's on me. Which brings us back to you. You with the back problems. Or maybe you have a twinge in your neck or maybe you have severe scoliosis. Go see Dr. Jan. His office is conveniently located in midtown, and the team is incredibly passionate about making everything better. And then, after a few appointments you will wonder if there was something pathologically addicted to pain inside of your head which kept you from tending to your issues proactively. Don't live in pain. You don't have to. Pick up the phone."

"When the baby was facing the wrong way, Dr. Jan performed the Webster technique. In the last ultrasound before giving birth, she was in the correct position."

"Full disclosure - I've known Jan (Dr. Lefkowitz) my entire life, but never in a professional or medical environment until I injured my hip early in my 2nd pregnancy in 2011. After being misdiagnosed and treated by a Physical Therapist, I went to Jan, and after the first visit the pain was completely gone. After talking to him about the changes to a woman's joints, bones, etc. during pregnancy, I decided to continue treatments in an effort to keep things as balanced and aligned as possible. As a result, I suffered far less back pain than during my first pregnancy. When the baby was facing the wrong way at the end of the pregnancy, Jan performed the Webster technique on me, and in the last ultrasound before giving birth, she was in the correct position! The birth itself was relatively quick, uncomplicated, and completely drug free, which I attribute in part to Jan's treatments throughout the pregnancy. I already knew that Jan was a great guy, but am now impressed by his depth of knowledge of the body and pregnancy and his commitment to helping his patients."

"He explained how the pain in my chest stemmed from an irritated nerve in my back. I have never felt so good in my life — no medications, no brace, no surgery. My body healed itself."

"I found out about Dr. Lefkowitz when he interviewed me for an administrative position at his office. During the interview he went on and on about how important his patients are to him and how he NEEDS a receptionist who will make each patient feel important and comfortable. I ended up working somewhere else but I knew I wanted to give this doctor a try. I never realized how important chiropractic care is. When I was a child I had a severe back and shoulder injury and for years I had pain and couldn't understand why. I went to a different chiropractor but he was so harsh and rough with me and I was just a child! I was scared to go back. As the years went on my pain affected my ability to dance and I took private lessons with great instructors and even though I did the body movement exercises they taught me, it didn't help. My pain began to travel to my knees and it got so bad I couldn't bend my knee or walk without pain. I went to a knee specialist and he did X-rays and said I would need knee surgery. Also, for as long as I can remember, I've always had pain in my chest and I always went to different doctors and none of them ever found anything wrong. Sometimes the pain in my chest would stop me mid sentence and I couldn't talk or walk or even breathe heavily until the pain went away. When Dr. Jan examined me, he saw a ton of problems in my back and he PATIENTLY gave me a DETAILED explanation as to WHY I've been having pain and how the pain affected my knees, my neck, my back and even my chest! He explained how the pain I was feeling in my chest stemmed from an irritated nerve in my back caused from my subluxation. Before I even told him about my childhood injury he helped me put the pieces together and understand why I was having so much pain and how it has been affecting my dancing and my everyday life. I gave him a try and he put me on a treatment plan. I have never felt so good in my life!! I feel like I'm a child again! I can run, I can jump, I can dance better than ever!! All because Dr. Lefkowitz adjusted my spine. I didn't need any medications, a brace, or surgery. My body healed itself. I have been seeing him for over a year and I have never again felt pain in my chest since seeing him. The reason I stress this doctor so much is because how thorough he is when it comes to finding the source of his patient's pain. Other doctors look at you as a dollar sign and move on when they can't help you. When I'm there, I feel like I'm amongst family. I love them and I wouldn't trust anyone else to work on my spine."
